For many years people have become increasingly capable of utilizing IT in their daily work and private life. People choose from multiple vendors the digital services and applications they need to digitalize their processes and interactions with their ecosystem.
High level of digitalization as democratic problem
For some of the most digitalized countries, all interactions between citizens, government agencies, local agencies, and other public institutions such as schools or health care are fully digitalized. This includes personal identification, information sharing, personal counseling, and signatures.
In such countries, critique has been raised that this level of digitalization represents a democratic problem, as some of the not IT-savvy citizens may receive a degraded or non-existing public service.
For the first time, Gartner points to a similar problem in their latest Hype Cycle™ for Enterprise Architecture 2022.
Employees buy their own digital solutions
According to Gartner, 41% of employees outside of the IT department are producing (building or buying) their own digital solutions. Gartner characterizes this democratization of digital work as a positive trend. Still, they also point out that it represents a risk for a fragmented and inefficient organization.
